April Events with SPJ

With just over a month left in the semester, the University of Minnesota’s Society of Professional Journalists chapter has several upcoming events to end the school year strong.

The Silha Center is sponsoring a Cameras in the Courtroom panel that SPJ will attend. It is Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. in Murphy Hall.

The First Amendment Free Food Festival is on Tuesday, April 17 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Coffman Plaza. Free food will be available from several local restaurants like Toppers and Jimmy Johns. If you are willing to sign away your first amendment rights, the food is yours!

Matt Waite, the founder of Politifact, will speak Friday, April 20 at 11:30 a.m. in Murphy Hall.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Spring Showcase is Wednesday, May 2 at 5:00 p.m. SPJ representatives will be in attendance to talk about our chapter and celebrate another successful year at the U.

Our next meeting is Thursday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. in Murphy Hall 314. We hope to see you there!

Resume and cover letter panel, resume critiques, and FREE PIZZA! On Friday, Nov. 19 from noon-2pm at Murphy Hall Room 100. Come hear what professional journalists in the Twin Cities look for in intern and job applications. It will be fun and informational! Bring yourself, Bring a friend, and Bring your resume!!!

  • Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown University. This academic internship program provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of journalism and communications, while living in the nation’s capital.   • MN SPJ Presents Intern Night at KSTP, Wednesday Oct. 20th from 7-8:30pm. Email kbendell@kstp.com if you are interested in going, and she can reserve you a spot! Tours of KSTP are also available that night at 6:30pm and 8:30pm. Email any questions to minnesota.spj@gmail.com
  • Investigative Journalist Edwin Black will speak on Thursday Oct. 7 at 9:30am in Murphy Hall Room 100.

  • More speakers are being lined up, including: a tv news producer, news director, and many more journalists. Plus, have a chance to tour the MN Daily offices when you come hear speaker Alan Bjerga!
